The California Assessor's Handbook runs thousands of pages, and both citizens and county staff were burning time either misreading the rules or fielding the same questions over and over. This assistant retrieves answers from the handbook and shows the source page for every response, so nothing has to be taken on faith, plus a decision-tree tool that points people to the right exemption form.
I was one of five developers who built the prototype. Stack: Amazon OpenSearch Serverless for the vector knowledge base, Textract for pulling tables and charts out of the handbook, Titan Text v2 for embeddings, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet on Bedrock for the actual answers.
